Suggested Itineraries
Peloponnese and Argosaronic Islands
The Saronic Gulf is by far the most famous sailing area in Greece due to its proximity to Athens. Apart from the location also the rich ancient history of places like Epidavros, Sounion, Poros, Aegina and Methana attracts tourists and sailors alike to these waters. You can sail to Aegina, Poros, Hydra or head sail for the east coast of the Peloponnese, where there are unspoilt harbours and anchorages. A second excellent yachting area is the Argolic Gulf. The Peloponnese and with it the Argolida – was once linked to Attica by the Isthmus of Corinth and now breached by the Corinth Canal.

The Argolic Gulf is bordered by two mountainous regions except at the head of the gulf where the mountains give way dramatically. Mycenae – like the city of Argos – north of Navplion is definitely worth a visit, though it is located inland, but can be reached by taxi or bus from the town of Navplion. The ancient town of Mycenae was the capital of the great Helladic civilization between about 1650 and 1100 BCE. Other places, Leonidion, Poulithra, Astros, Kaidhari and the island of Spetses make the Argolic Gulf a popular yacht charter area, which is just a couple of days sailing from Athens.

Main Islands in the Argosaronic Gulf
A
egina, is lying some 17 nm south-west of Piraeus. The main occupation of the inhabitants is farming, in particular the growing and export of the island’s excellent pistachio nuts. Fishing, sponge-diving and pottery manufacture are also of some economic importance. Aegina is noted for the production of its water-coolers (kannatia) – two-handled wide-necked jars in a porous fabric which keep their contents cool by evaporation. With its mild climate and low rainfall, Aegina has long been favoured as a summer resort by the prosperous citizens of Athens.

The Hydra gulf lies between the saronic gulf and the argolic gulf and is a one of the most popular yacht charter areas in Greece.  North-west of Hydra is the little grazing island of Dokos, with the village of the same name in a sheltered bay on the north coast. The mainland (in fact the Peloponnese peninsula) features many interesting anchorages and the handsome village of Ermioni.

Spetses, is a hilly and well-wooded island off the south-west coast of the Argolida. No motor vehicles are allowed on Spetses apart from public service vehicles.
The island’s capital, Spetses, is built on the gentle slopes above the wide bay containing its harbour. The present town, with a number of handsome mansions and three interesting churches in Kastelli, the upper town, dates from the 19th century.
